In a world increasingly reliant on technology, bridging the digital divide and empowering young minds with essential ICT skills is a crucial step towards a brighter future. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) recognized this imperative and took action by launching the Connected African Girls Coding Camp in 2020. Since its inception, this initiative has played a pivotal role in equipping African girls and young women with the digital skills they need to succeed. In collaboration with host governments, UN Women, and the ITU, this remarkable program has successfully organized seven hybrid coding camps, impacting the lives of 35,000 trainees. Now, as we look ahead to its eighth edition, we are excited to share the details of the upcoming Connected African Girls Hybrid Coding Camp, co-hosted by ECA and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique.

A Glimpse into the Past

The Connected African Girls Coding Camp has been on a mission to empower young African women since 2020. Through its innovative hybrid boot camps, this program has been instrumental in fostering digital literacy and igniting the passions of thousands of girls across the continent. These coding camps are more than just workshops; they are transformative experiences that prepare young African women for the digital age.

The Success Story Continues

With the collective efforts of ECA, host governments, UN Women, and the ITU, this initiative has touched the lives of 35,000 trainees, shaping their futures and creating opportunities for economic empowerment. The impact of these coding camps cannot be overstated, as they contribute to Africa’s integration, stimulate inclusive economic growth, promote job creation, and equip African girls and young women with the modern tools needed for digital management.

The 8th Connected African Girls Hybrid Coding Camp

This year’s Connected African Girls Hybrid Coding Camp promises to be another groundbreaking event. Co-hosted by ECA and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique, this camp is set to take place in Chimoio, Mozambique, from October 23rd to October 29th, 2023. The event will bring together more than 60 girls from various provinces of Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe, and Angola.

Diversity and Inclusivity

The camp aims to serve girls and women between the ages of 12 and 25, with a unique blend of in-person attendance and over a thousand online participants from across the continent. This commitment to inclusivity ensures that as many young African women as possible have access to this transformative experience, regardless of their geographical location.

Empowering the Next Generation

Throughout the 7-day tailored workshop, participants will receive essential technical education and skill training designed to provide a strong foundation for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, employment, and entrepreneurship. The curriculum will feature rotational classes covering Robotics, IoT (Internet of Things), AI (Artificial Intelligence), 3D printing, Animation, Gaming, and Web development.
